30 Icons of the Attitude Era (in no particular order)

18/30 → Lita

I single-handedly revolutionized women’s roles in the WWE.
No, listen to this: Before me, all women were eye candy.
There were no moonsaults, there were no Litacanranas.
All the sacrifices I made, whether tearing everything out of
my knee, whether breaking my neck or getting verbally
berated by you idiots every week… all the sacrifices I made.
I inspired a generation of women. Without me, there would
be no Mickie James! For that matter, without me there would
be no Trish Stratus!

hi!! first of all, i’d like to thank you for your blog that became my reference since i’ve discovered wrestling! second, i wanted to know if you’d be willing to discuss kenny’s reign with me. tbh, i’ve begun to watch njpw matches in april so i’m a newbie. the reason i’ve became interrested in wrestling is the golden lovers and kenny. as a bisexual, i’ve been drawn to him and the very lgbt storyline of the GL. i was super happy when he won but now… not so much. basically i feel like (1/2) – H

…i feel like his reign as the iwgp champion is only used to make the public root for tanahashi and/or ibushi. don’t get me wrong, i love ibushi and tanahashi, they’re super talented, they both absolutely deserve to be champions, as proven by the G1 28, and they don’t need kenny to be loved by the public or deserving of the title. but i still feel like they’re not establishing kenny as a true champion but rather as an undeserving wrestler who should lose his title. idk if that makes sens! 22/-H

i know my previous messages said “½” and “2/2” implyling that there would only be two messages but i just wanted to say that of course you don’t have to answer me!! but idk i guess i’ve been kinda bumped out with the way kenny’s reign is playing out and i’d like to discuss it with someone to feel a little bit better 🙂 also you have way more knowledge about wrestling than me so i though it would be interresting to get your opinion on the matter! -H (3/2 i guess haha)

Hi! First of all I gotta admit I haven’t been paying as close attention to NJPW as I usually do, so my take might be very off! But I do have some (only like 2 years) history of watching so maybe that’ll help. This is uh not going to be super coherent but here we go!

The first thing you’ve gotta know about NJPW is that they do long-term stories. Like, years and years long stories. If you’re someone who first got into WWE and then njpw that can be an adjustment, I remember being super confused by it at first (”wait why is Kenny losing in the first round of the NJPW Cup after he just almost beat Okada in the main event of wrestle kingdom???”) but you get used to it!

It’s funny that you say he kind of feels like an undeserving champion, because I feel like the entire road to getting Kenny that title was all about that! Starting all the way back in the beginning of 2016, we watched Kenny evolve from being a cheating little shit who came close at WK to a guy determined to win fair and square who took Okada to a 60-min draw at Dominion. We saw how far he could come with his heart broken, and then we saw what he could achieve after it was made whole again! (don’t even get me STARTED on like “heart and soul” in wrestling, specifically Japanese Strong Style wrestling and Kenny’s own use of that specific imagery to self-loathingly discuss what he was lacking back when he was a heel). In the end he had to be worthy of that title to win it, and it was a journey that took him years.

But that being said I can see what you mean. Since then I think the story hasn’t felt cohesive in the same way. Partly that’s because there are a lot of things going on at once (and Kenny is in a lot of places at once, not just NJPW). And it’s also partly because the title just isn’t the most important thing to Kenny right now (it’s Kota) and so the story rn isn’t so much about Kenny the Champion as it is about Kenny and Kota (and Kenny and Kota and Tana)? (It feels especially striking after having Okada as champion, since the title was always so center to everything he did, since it was such a key component of his identity.)

And it’s also partly because this time of year is all about the G1 and then building to WK, which means it’s all about the challenger. It’s Tana’s time to get built up and say his piece. So Kota and Tana really are getting a lot of attention rn, but I don’t think that’ll ultimately be a comment on Kenny’s run as champ (unless he loses at WK) so much as it is a comment on this moment in time?

That’s how I feel rn anyway. I will definitely feel differently if Kenny loses at WK. Feel free to message me personally if you want to keep talking about it!
